Framing 101- How we Make Room for Your Larger Door

The front door of your home or business can make a statement. If you’re not loving the statement it’s currently making, it might be time for custom wrought iron doors. If you currently have a single door entry, you might consider upgrading to a double door. If you prefer a single but want to enhance the look a bit more, think about adding windows along the side. If you’re considering your backyard patio door, a larger doorway makes for a more seamless transition to the outdoor space. Enlarging your door frame might be a task you’re dreading. It doesn’t have to be! Want to learn more? Here’s a little lesson on door framing 101.

How to Make an Exterior Door Frame Bigger

The following process will be the same for wood, vinyl and metal door frames. Just be sure to use the right type of tools for your materials. While it is possible to DIY this project, it is always best to work with a professional.

First, you’ll need to remove the existing door using a screwdriver. Be sure to enlist the help of another adult since this can be very heavy. Second, use a utility knife to cut between the frame and the doorway. Next, pry the door frame away from the doorway using a medium-sized putty knife or similar tool. Then, use a pencil or chalk to mark on the wall the size of your new, larger door frame. Double-check that there are no pipes or wires in your way. Using the appropriate tool for your wall’s material, cut along the guide you created. Finally, ensure everything is straight by using a level and fix any problem areas.

Be sure you have the new door frame and door ready to go before starting this project. You don’t want to end up with a large hole in the front of your home or business for too long!
